A congregational mosque built on the vocabulary of Islamic architecture at a contemporary scale.
About the Project
A design built on the vocabulary of Islamic architecture, from domes and minarets to arches, handled so as to keep the dignity of the place and serve the movement of worshippers. Natural and artificial lighting were resolved to serve the atmosphere of prayer within the prayer hall.
Development of the Mosque Design
From the first proposal to the final design
The initial proposal for the mosque design was submitted by the owner. After reviewing the design and carrying out the necessary architectural and technical studies, the project was developed through a number of substantive changes that raised the quality of the design and strengthened its architectural identity. Chief among these changes:
Redesign of the domes
Removing the green colour, for the architectural significance it carries of a sacred grave within the mosque, which does not apply to this project, and replacing it with colours in keeping with an authentic Islamic character and with the identity of the Prophet’s Mosque.
Refinement of the architectural proportions
Refining the architectural proportions of all the principal elements, achieving a better visual balance and strengthening the grandeur and coherence of the architectural mass.
Development of the minaret design
Replacing the Ottoman style with one more closely tied to the Islamic architecture of the Prophet’s Mosque, reflecting the local identity of the project and strengthening its belonging to the place.
Study of the air-conditioning and thermal distribution systems
Carrying out an integrated study of the air-conditioning and thermal distribution systems, to secure the highest levels of thermal comfort and efficient air distribution within the mosque, with regard to operational and sustainability considerations.
These changes produced a design more balanced architecturally and more closely tied to the identity of Madinah, with improved functional and environmental performance, reflecting a design vision that joins authenticity to efficiency.
